Dog Friendly Beaches in and around Scarborough

Scarborough is a perfect destination for dog lovers to go. Not only does it have the most amazing beaches in North Yorkshire but also the Cleveland Way, waterfalls, forests and tons of other dog loving places right on the doorstep,   After all that walking it is also good to know that Scarborough is also extremely dog friendly with many bars and restaurants welcoming your pooch and plenty of accommodation you can stay at with your dog as well.

Scarborough is renowned for its beautiful beaches, stunning scenery and gorgeous headlands, with easy access to other fabulous towns nearby. Living in Scarborough as we do, with our two dogs, one mad Cocker Spaniel called Dottie and the master of the dog world our tiny but very large personality Pomeranian called Gatsby (but shortened to Pom), we regular sample the dog friendly life here and knowing how people like to travel and share their time with their dogs when holidaying in the UK, we have made all our properties at  https://www.theboathousescarbo...pet friendly.

North Bay

The Boat House luxury apartments over look North Bay, which is one of the most celebrated beaches across the Yorkshire Coast, offering both cliff top walks and an extensive stretch of sand all the way down to Scalby Mills. This walk in itself is enough to give your dogs a pretty good work out, but combine this with a walk along the marine drive that connects the North Bay to the South Bay and back and you will have done over 30,000 steps without realising it!. There is always the chance of dolphin spotting as well, along with the fabulous history and facts of Scarborough to absorb whilst taking in the scenery around Marine Drive. The Beach does exercise restrictions during summer which is usually from around May 1st to September 30th. The beaches are well sign posted with designated areas, which on North Bay is either end, with a good amount of space kept for your dogs to enjoy a sandy tumble and a sea dip

Scalby Mills on North Bay

One of our favourite destination points for us is Scalby Mills, its a lovely spot at the end of the North Bay, where you will find a beautiful white washed pub, with plenty of seating outside, a cracking menu, lots of dog bowls and a fantastic view back over North Bay. Dog walks have to have their rewards especially if you have gone the full two bays!!

South Bay

South Bay is the bustling heart of Scarborough and renowned for the preservation of a traditional seaside town. Complete with an abundance of fantastic fish and chips shops, arcades, the Harbour Bar Ice Cream parlour, which does the best knickerbocker glories going and of course award winning beach. Dogs are pretty much welcome everywhere, inside the arcades, the restaurants and bars and of course the beach, which has the summer restrictions with dogs allowed on the beach at the Scarborough Spa side, near the Beachcomber café.

Cayton Bay

One of my favourite places to go just outside of Scarborough is Cayton Bay. It’s a really special beach, quiet, beautiful and dramatic with very little tourism and just one café to stop at. There is quite a steep climb down, so be prepared for this, your dogs will no doubt be pulling you along exited for their adventure. Cayton Bay is also popular with history lovers, with its connections to WWII with Gunner Posts still present on the beach. Here is Dottie enjoying a roam and the headland.

Throxenby Mere and Raincliffe Woods

Having lived in Raincliffe Woods, in a house there, not the woods themselves, we were privileged to enjoy some stunning walks.  The usual morning run would be down Low Road to The Mere which is a lovely lake which Dottie loves to jump into, following the ducks and geese there.  Raincliffe woods offer many gorgeous walks, an abundance of birds with look out posts in the pull ins to admire the many species and a lovely boardwalk with the dogs that lead to the Ayton Castle ruins that are stunning.  Take in the gorgeous aroma of wild garlic that is prevalent during the spring and early summer months.

Cleveland Way

For a serious dog walk, the Cleveland way is on your doorstep, miles and miles of walking opportunity with seriously dramatic scenery.  When we have more time, we are looking forward to adding this to our lovely walks, but we hope that you will sample a piece of this splendid terrain in the meantime.

The list of course goes on, not to be missed is Scarborough Castle, Peasholm Park, as well as the woodland walk here,  Hayburn Wyke and Waterfall (also with a lovely pub) North Yorkshire Water Park, just a short drive with fantastic walks and then of course Dalby Forrest! I think that this is the place to come with your dogs, but I might be biased and if you do decide to explore this coast why not stay at The Boat House  https://www.theboathousescarbo....  which offers you the best sea views, luxury accommodation and of course Dog Friendly.  We also have a full list of dog friendly places to eat as well as a dog sitter for those nights when you might want to enjoy an intimate meal at somewhere like the Michelin Lanterna on Queen Street. !!

Most of the photos are taken by Mr Andy Brockway himself!
