Scarborough is one of the most dog-friendly coastal towns in the UK, and for guests staying at The Boat House, it means your four-legged companion never has to miss out on the experience. From sea-view brunch spots and relaxed coffee houses to traditional pubs and lively bars, there are plenty of places where muddy paws are warmly welcomed.
Whether you’ve spent the morning walking North Bay, exploring Cayton Bay, or wandering the cliff-top paths above the castle, there is always a cosy corner nearby where both you and your dog can rest, refuel and soak up the atmosphere of this coastal town.

Scarborough’s café culture is wonderfully relaxed, with many independent spots embracing dogs as part of daily life.
Our favourite is Me'N'U Cafe, which is just down from The Boat House, where you and your pooch will be warmly greeted, expect excellent views from the terrace and fabulous coffee, cake, breakfast and lunch menus!
Another popular choices is The BellyRub, a laid-back craft beer bar and café where dogs are genuinely part of the atmosphere. Expect water bowls, treats and plenty of friendly attention while you enjoy street-food-style dishes or a casual drink after a coastal walk.
For a slower pace by the harbour, Caffe Royale on Sandside is another favourite. Known for excellent coffee, generous cakes and afternoon teas, it is a welcoming stop for dog owners exploring the seafront and the old town as well as being the perfect place to catch the morning sun where you can They also stock Sir Woofchester's as a special treat for your pooch!
Olive on bar street is not to be missed. I think it serves the best coffee and heavenly cake! I also love Bar Street, so an excuse to wander down here is always lovely, especially in the mid to late morning, there will be chairs outside and its a perfect sun trap. Do try their focaccia bread sandwiches, it will be a treat you will not forget! This is when I have to confess that the lemon and blueberry cake there was mine and not Andy's!

If you prefer something more contemporary, Marisco Lounge offers sea-view dining with a relaxed all-day café-bar feel, where dogs are welcome inside while you enjoy brunch, lunch or an early evening drink overlooking the coast. We love the vibe in here, the artwork and the views from upstairs over the harbour are super.

Scarborough’s pubs are full of character, and many are happily dog friendly, especially in bar areas and beer gardens.
We have a number of favourites, but let's start with our local, The Leeds Arms in the Old Town! It's a fabulous pub full of local characters and chat, friendly service and great selection of beers. Dogs are always made welcome and the old bread oven even stores a treat jar! There are many things we get up to there, dressing up for Halloween is one of them, here I am with my blind Pomeranian Gatsby, who loved his cape!
The Albert is a fabulous pub, just across the road from The Boat House and one we frequented regularly at the end of a long shift whilst doing the renovation! The Owners know us well here and will regale stories of what we used to look like - and sometimes when you see us - we still do! They have a fabulous sun catch out the back, really welcome atmosphere and a cracking Sunday lunch.
Scalby Mills is another favourite, after a nice walk along North bay, we love stopping here, taking one of the benches outside and enjoying a relaxed drink, whilst taking in the breath taking views back to the Castle.
Further afield but two places that are absolutely worth a drive out to Scalby for, is The Nags Head, which has a lovely large beer garden, is a proper local pub and a place to happily while away a few hours or further along in the same village, The Plough, which a dog friendly gastro pub and one not to miss. The village itself hosts many events, including Scalby Fair, Folk Music at The Nags Head plus many other live artists not to miss.
One of the joys of Scarborough is how easy it is to combine walking and eating without ever needing to leave your dog behind.
After a windswept walk along North Bay or Marine Drive, you’ll find plenty of cafés and pubs within easy reach of the seafront. Many offer water bowls outside, dog treats behind the bar and a genuinely welcoming attitude towards muddy paws and sandy coats.
It is completely normal here to walk straight off the beach and into a café still carrying the scent of the sea.
Here is Gatsby, then with both of his lovely eyes, enjoying a beach walk in his festive jumper,

Beyond the main seafront, Scarborough’s Old Town and surrounding streets are full of independent cafés that quietly welcome dogs.
Small coffee houses, artisan bakeries and tucked-away spots often allow dogs inside or provide outdoor seating where they can settle beside you while you rest. These are the kinds of places you discover by wandering — and often return to again and again during your stay.
What makes Scarborough special is not just the number of dog-friendly venues, but the attitude behind them. Dogs are not treated as an afterthought here — they are part of the experience.
From coastal cafés to historic pubs, most places understand that your dog is part of your holiday. Water bowls appear without asking, staff offer a fuss at the door, and there is a relaxed understanding that seaside days are better when shared, especially if there is a treat about to be handed out, or a few as in the case below!

After a full day exploring cafés, bars and coastal paths, there is nothing better than returning to your apartment at The Boat House — sandy paws, tired legs and all — to watch the sea settle into the evening light.
That balance of exploration and comfort is what makes Scarborough such a special place for dog-friendly stays.
