One of the joys of staying in The Boat House is just how wonderfully dog friendly Scarborough is. Beyond the beaches and coastal walks, there are countless places where both humans and hounds are warmly welcomed — from historic castles and miniature railways to peaceful gardens, cliff-top cafés and hidden coves.
Whether your four-legged companion enjoys long adventurous hikes or simply pottering beside you with a nose full of sea air, Scarborough offers the perfect coastal playground.

The Boat House overlooks North Bay, one of the Yorkshire coast’s most celebrated stretches of coastline. Wide open sea views, dramatic cliffs and long sandy walks make this one of the best daily adventures for energetic dogs and their humans alike.
From North Bay you can continue along Marine Drive, the scenic route connecting North and South Bay beneath the castle headland. The sea crashes dramatically against the cliffs on rough-weather days and if you are lucky, you may even spot dolphins offshore.
Combined together, North Bay and Marine Drive can easily become a full day’s wandering without ever needing to step into the car.

Just a short stroll from The Boat House, Peasholm Park is one of Scarborough’s most loved green spaces and ideal for relaxed dog walks away from the beach.
The park’s winding paths, lakeside trails, woodland ravines and beautifully landscaped gardens create a peaceful atmosphere for slower mornings and leisurely afternoons. There is plenty of shade during warmer weather and lots of interesting scents for curious noses.
During the summer months, the famous naval battle re-enactments add a wonderfully nostalgic touch to the experience.

Towering above the coastline for more than 3,000 years, Scarborough Castle offers some of the most spectacular sea views in England — and plenty of open grassy space for adventurous dogs to explore.
The dramatic headland between North and South Bay is especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset, when the coastline stretches endlessly in both directions and the harbour glows below.
After exploring the ruins, stop for coffee overlooking the sea while your dog enjoys the fresh coastal air and endless interesting smells carried on the wind.

For a wonderfully nostalgic afternoon, hop aboard the miniature North Bay Railway which runs between Peasholm Park and Scalby Mills.
Dogs are welcome to travel alongside their humans while the little steam trains rumble gently along the coast. The route itself is full of sea views and there are cafés, beaches and walking routes waiting at either end.
It is one of those simple Scarborough pleasures that somehow appeals equally to children, adults and enthusiastic dogs alike.

Tucked into Scarborough’s South Cliff, the beautiful Italian Gardens offer a quieter and more elegant side to the town.
The terraced gardens, ornamental lake and winding woodland paths create a peaceful setting for romantic strolls and gentle dog walks away from the busier promenade areas. It feels wonderfully tucked away despite being close to the town centre.
In spring and summer especially, this is one of the prettiest corners of Scarborough to explore together.
For panoramic coastal views and big open skies, head to Oliver's Mount overlooking Scarborough from the southwest.
The wide open space is ideal for energetic dogs who enjoy longer walks, and the elevated position offers incredible views across the coastline and countryside. If you visit during race events, there is often an exciting atmosphere around the famous motorcycle circuit too.
Time your visit for late afternoon and stay for sunset — the evening light across the sea can be spectacular.

One of our personal favourites just outside Scarborough, Cayton Bay feels wonderfully wild and untouched compared with some of the busier beaches nearby.
This dramatic dog-friendly cove welcomes dogs year-round and is perfect for adventurous beach days, sea swims and windswept coastal walks. The steep path down only adds to the feeling that you are discovering somewhere slightly secret.
There is little here beyond the beach, cliffs, sea and one lovely café — which is exactly part of its charm.
History lovers may also spot the remains of WWII gunner posts still scattered across the coastline.
Scarborough’s Old Town is wonderfully atmospheric for wandering with dogs. Cobbled streets, colourful cottages, independent shops and hidden alleyways create one of the town’s most characterful areas.
Many of the small independent shops welcome dogs inside, often with water bowls waiting outside their doors. One of our favourites is The Purple Pup, though almost every corner of the Old Town feels dog friendly and relaxed.
It is the perfect place for slow afternoons, coffee stops and seaside pottering after long beach walks.
Scarborough is full of places where dogs are greeted just as warmly as their owners.
Some of our favourite dog-friendly stops include:
The Old Scalby Mills - on North Bay
Me’N’U Café - above Oasis North Bay
The Belly Rub - Victoria Road
The Albert just over the road from The Boat House
Harbour Bar - Sandside
Expect water bowls, treats, muddy paws and sea views in abundance.
If you fancy venturing slightly further afield, some of the Yorkshire coast’s most beautiful dog walks are within easy reach of The Boat House.

The beauty of staying in Scarborough is that you can combine seaside town charm with endless nearby coastal adventures.

At the end of a long day exploring beaches, cliffs and cafés, there is nothing better than returning to warm interiors, salty sea air drifting through the windows and a sleepy dog curled up after a full day beside the coast.
That is exactly the kind of stay The Boat House was designed for.
